Turtle Islands Park @ Sandakan

On the east coast of Sabah, about 45 minutes boat ride from Sandakan city is a special island called the Turtle Islands Park. Selingan, Bakkungan Kechil, and Gulisan Island make up this region, which was gazetted as a marine park in 1977.

The Sabah Park headquarters, turtle hatchery, accommodation, and basic amenities are located on Selingan, the biggest island in the park. Meanwhile, Bakkungan Kechil Island’s main highlight will be the existence of mud volcanoes, believed to have therapeutic properties. All three islands recorded frequent turtle landings for nesting, making it known as the Turtle Islands Park, a safe haven for Hawksbills and Green turtles in this region.

Of the three islands, turtle viewing can only be experienced at Selingan Island. There are options for a day trip or overnight tour. However, most travel agents will offer the later. Turtle landings usually occur after dusk, hence an overnight stay would be the best plan to see the turtles as they come ashore to lay their eggs. During the daytime, visitors can enjoy snorkeling or lounge around the island. Selingan Island has great snorkeling sites with sightings of clownfish, geofish, and giant clams among others. After dinner, rangers will inform if there are any turtle landings, and visitors will be guided by them to witness a turtle laying eggs. It is important to note that shining a light on them or using camera flashes should be avoided, as it can be stressful on the wildlife. Sabah Park conservation rangers will then collect the eggs and move them to the hatchery area.

Turtles lay their eggs throughout the year, but the best time to head there is between July and October, when the sea is calmer. Observe the collection of eggs, tagging of mother turtles, and releasing baby turtles to the sea. This wholesome experience not only makes you happy, but it also brings you closer to nature with new appreciation value. To further support their conservation works, visitors are encouraged to take part in the turtle nest adoption program. Every adoptive family will receive a certificate of adoption, their name will be proudly placed on the turtle nest, and they will receive periodic information regarding the progress of the nest.

As a protected area, permission to visit the park must be obtained from Sabah Parks and can be applied through Crystal Quest, the management in charge of operating accommodation at Turtle Island. Their office is located at Sabah Park Jetty in Sandakan. Visitors are advised to book in advance to prevent disappointment, as there are a limited number of rooms on the island. Alternatively, tours to Turtle Islands Park can also be booked from a licensed tour agent.
